Diphtheria

Diphtheria is seldom seen in the United States because of high public levels of immunization with the DPT vaccine. In the New Independent States (formerly the USSR), because of social upheaval, DPT immunization rates have fallen. In 1994, they had an epidemic with 47,000 reported cases. Diphtheria is a severe and sometimes life-threatening illness. Classically, diphtheria produces a grey to white "membrane" in the throat that can enlarge and choke (asphyxiate) the individual. The organism also produces toxins that damage the heart (producing heart disease) and the nervous system.
