HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS

1998-99 Catalog Description of Chemistry 104 Major topics include chemical kinetics, chemical equilibria, acid-base equilibria, chemical thermo-dynamics, electrochemistry, descriptive inorganic chemistry, and coordination chemistry. Lab work includes inorganic synthesis, qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis in kinetics, acid-base and redox chemistry. 3 hrs lecture, 1 hour prelab and 3 hrs lab.

Required Text: Chemistry: The Central Science by Brown, LeMay and Bursten, 7th Edition, Prentice-Hall, 1997. Recommended Text: Student's Guide to Chemistry: The Central Science by James C. Hill, 7th Edition, Prentice-Hall, 1997. On reserve in Science Library: Solutions Guide to Red Exercises.

Exams and Grades

Your final grade will be based on a possible total of 100 points distributed as follows:

Homework Problems (8 sets)  10 points
 Lecture Exam 1 - Tuesday, March 2  15 points
 Lecture Exam 2 - Tuesday, April 6  15 points
 Lecture Exam 3 - Tuesday, May 4  15 points
Final Lecture Exam - Saturday, May 15  20 points
 Laboratory*  25 points

* You must complete all lab experiments and reports to pass the course.

Exams are scheduled from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. There are very few excuses that I will accept for missing an exam. Regardless of what the excuse is, I must be notified prior to the exam. Please call x2434 and leave me a message! My voice mail will indicate the date and time that you attempted to reach me. An official excuse from the Dean of Students' Office is required if you need to reschedule the final exam.

Letter grades will be determined according to the following standard scale:

 Grade  %
 A+  97.0 - 100
 A  93.0 - 96.9
 A-  90.0 - 92.9
 B+  87.0 - 89.9
 B  83.0 - 86.9
 B-  80.0 - 82.9
 C+  77.0 - 79.9
 C  73.0 - 76.9
 C-  70.0 - 72.9
 D  55.0 - 69.9
 F  < 55
Final course averages will be determined for each member of the class and then those averages will be used to generate a class mean. If the class mean falls at or above 82%, then grades will be assigned based on the scale shown. If the class average is below 82%, then an adjustment of the class mean may be made at the instructor's discretion and all individual grades will be adjusted up in an equivalent manner. No grades will be adjusted down!

Homework assignments: Homework problems for the semester are assigned below. Any changes to the assignments or the due dates will be announced in class. You can work on homework problems with other members of the class although, CLEARLY it is a violation of the Honor Code to simply copy someone's homework! I plan to announce other problems from your book and from other books that you can work on. These additional problems will not be graded but may show up on an exam. :-)
