Are leaders born or made? Do leaders determine history, or are leaders products of the times in which they live? Do the answers to these questions change when the social, cultural, and political context varies? This seminar will approach the subject of leadership from an interdisciplinary (politics and psychology) perspective, focusing on (1) the individual personalities, character, and values of leaders; (2) the relationship of leaders to the institutions they serve; (3) the role of the state and cultural context in which the leadership is exercised; and (4) the process of leading. We will use case studies to help us understand and integrate political and psychological perspectives on leadership.
