Frequently Asked Questions
Can my exam date be rescheduled? The short answer is "no," unless you are ill or there is a serious emergency . Normally, exams can be rescheduled by faculty only if the Dean of Students grants permission. This term Professor Leng will be away during the exam period, so it will not be possible to schedule a make-up exam. Check your schedule to be certain that you can be at the exam at the scheduled time. What is the penalty for a late paper? The penalty for any paper received after the beginning of class on the date the paper is due is one-third of a letter grade for each calendar day late. (Weekend days count.) Do not cut class on the day of the paper assignment to complete the paper. It already is a day late after the class begins. Excuses are granted only in the case of serious illness or emergency. If you have other commitments occurring near the paper due date, such as an athletic event, plan ahead and begin work on your paper early so that you will not have a problem. How do I cite internet and web sources? There now are standard APA and MLA formats for these citations. To find them, go to the library website and the Style Guides in the Reference Information section of the Electronic Reading Room. You can get there by clicking below. In addition to the material listed in the style guides, add the author’s affiliation, if that is available. Which International Law Cases will be on the Mid-Term? Professor Leng will give you a list a week or so before the mid-term exam. Is class attendance required? No, but you will be graded on your class participation. You also are responsible for all material covered in class, including those classes that you do not attend. How long should the term paper be? See the Term Paper link. How do I avoid plagiarism? My definition of plagiarism is the same as that in the Handbook. Plagiarism occurs when you use someone’s ideas or information as if it originated with you. Provide source citations for all information that is not common knowledge. For example, you would not need to footnote a reference to the date on which the United Nations was founded, but you would need to footnote a reference to remarks by President Truman. When in doubt, add the source citation. (On the other hand, try to keep direct quotations to a minimum.)
